Although not a word widely known by children today in the developed world, the word poliomyelitis continues to instill fear in parents in Africa and Asia as the crippling disease continues to plague children in four polio-endemic countries and threatens children everywhere who have not be properly immunized against the disease. There are almost daily stories in the world's press about polio and the effort to eradicate the disease.
